Connection is the key to deal with loneliness. However, it’s more about quality than quantity interactions. Then there’s the issue of ‘time’. Research tells us it takes 50 hours to develop a 'casual friend', 90 hours for a 'simple friend' and 200+ hours for a 'close friend'. That's equivalent to 1-hour a week over 4 years to develop a close friendship! (University of Kansas)
Sadly, most projects that claim to target loneliness aren't effective. They are typically too short in timeframe and/or do not provide the necessary skills and ongoing experiences needed to move beyond loneliness.
Community Connectors are simply skilled friends who have learnt how to connect & listen to others without shutting them down. People who can make the community they live in a better place and impact a lonely world.
“It helped me look at myself and what I needed to work on to be able to help others” – Felicia
Did you know that lonely people are less wise? Research has found that loneliness is linked with decreased self-reflection, emotional regulation, empathy and compassion (University of California).
So, in a material world full of distractions and communication junk food (complaining, blaming or judging), deepening connections with others and developing wisdom within ourselves to alleviate loneliness is a big ask. Swipe left, scroll right, but where's the soul search button!
You can't take people further than you've gone yourself. This means doing a bit of soul searching yourself in the Soul Talk Project. Join us for an epic 30-week mind & soul journey and learn to re-connect with yourself and others.
"I've learnt to accept that people have their own choices and don't judge. Don't push my own barrow." – Andrew
At Life Cafe we move the conversation from small talk to Soul Talk by focusing on 'the big 5' existential issues (identity, isolation, death anxiety, meaning and freedom).
Did you know that psychology means 'study of the soul'? Life always has a way of asking simple questions that demand honest answers. For example, What's my life all about? What's my place in the world? Who's my tribe? How can I make a difference?
Life Cafes offer you a soul alternative to traditional mental health. A place where you can discover your why and give your soul a voice. Where you can move beyond loneliness and explore how to connect with yourself and others in deeper and more meaningful ways.
